About Bill Foulkes Birthplace : 5.1.32. St Helens Height : 5ft 9 Weight : 11st 10 Position : Midfield
Bill Foulkes was a bit of a strange character: on the few occasions when he wasn't selected for a match, he wouldn't react with moaning or transfer requests. He just trained harder than ever, determined to put himself back at the top, where he belonged. In fact between the 56/57 season and the 69/70 season he only missed 2 matches because of injury. He was one of the lucky few to survive the Munich disaster. After that he became a centre-half a role in which he shone. He was United's strength as if he was carved in granite. He was strong in the air and very careful not to expose his dribbling limitations. He was a real workhorse with a one-track mind aimed at the top. In fact he has a record of appearances that is beaten only by Bobby Charlton and is one of the very few to have won a European Cup medal at the age of 36. His best moment was near the end of the European Cup semi-final against Real Madrid when George Best crossed to the far post. Nobody expected Bill Foulkes to be there to score but he was. It was a very deserved honour.
