Sir Matt Busby was born in Orbiston, Lanarkshire on 26th May 1909. He joined MUFC as a manager in 1945. His first signing for the club was Jimmy Murphy who served the club magnificently as Assistant Manager until 1971. Together they created United's first great post-war team built around the defensive ability of Johnny Carey, John Aston and Allenby Chilton mixed with the attacking skills of Charlie Mitten, Jack Rowley and Stan Pearson. League Runners-up in 1947, 1948 and 1949,Man United were FA Cup Winners in 1948 defeating Blackpool 4-2. Runners-up again in 1951, the championship eventually came to Old Trafford in 1952.
By 1953 a younger team were blendingin the First Division as players like Bill Foulkes and Duncan Edwards all broke through in the team.Dubbed the Busby Babes, the team won the League in both 1956 and 1957 and were CupFinalists in 1957.
The following season was overshadowed by tragedy at Munich with Man United,suffering the loss of 8 players, the club Secretary, trainer and coach. Twice given the Last Rites, Sir Matt survived to see the team rebuilt by Jimmy Murphy reach the FA Cup Final.Despite poor League form MUFC fought through to a 3-1 F.A. Cup Final victory over Leicester Cityin 1963. The Swinging Sixties produced Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best as well as Nobby Stiles, Pat Crerand, Bill Foulkes and Alex Stepney. A Championship was won in 1965 followed by a second in 1967. After each of United's Championship victories,in 1956, 1957 and 1965, United's elimination at the semifinal stage had prevented the Sir Matt's dream of European Cup glory. In the European Cup Final against Benfica at Wembley, United defeated the Portuguese giants 4-1 after extra-time to give Busby victory. After 23 years as Manager Sir Matt Busby announced retirementat the end of 1968-69 season, when he won Manager of the Year. Wilf McGuinness as Manager and Sir Matt Busby became General Manager of the Club. He briefly returned as manager from 28th December 1970 until the end of the season. Then Sir Mattannounced his retirement and became a Director of the Club, holding this position until 1982. Sir Matt Busby was awarded the CBE in 1958, made the 66th Freeman of Manchesterin 1967, knighted after United's European Cup victory in 1968, and in 1972 was made a Knight Commander of St. Gregory by the Pope. He became President of Manchester United in 1980, being elected Vice-President of the Football League in 1982 and continued to become a life member.As well as guiding the British Olympic football team to a semi-final place in the 1948 Olympics, he was made Manager of Scotland in 1958, giving 18 year old Denis Law his first cap.
